Bio

Eva Mueller is a non-binary New York-based photographer and conceptual artist. They studied graphic design in their native Germany, fashion, and portrait photography at the International Center of Photography and Parsons School of Design in New York. After a fashion and music photographer career, Mueller shifted their focus to fine art and portraiture.

Most of Mueller's work looks deeper at our human existence's core constructs, such as gender identity, race, and sexuality. Mueller injects a fair amount of subtle wit into their stark, minimal compositions, strongly influenced by the German Bauhaus school. Being an active member of New York City's queer art and lifestyle community, many art projects revolve around the hidden and the unseen of those nonconforming environments. Mueller challenges the viewer to reconsider their perspective and question their judgments. They work in photography, video, and installation.

In 2017 Mueller presented GenderFuck, a portrait series of individuals outside the gender binary at the Leslie-Lohman Project Space in New York City.

In 2018 they presented FLOWERS & CHOCOLATE, an installation about Black male sexuality at Art During the Occupation Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. Along with the exhibition, Mueller launched a limited-edition artist's book. Flowers & Chocolate continues to show in group shows and again as a solo show in 2022 at the Soho Project Space in New York City.

With Twisted Twins – XXY, Mueller created an immersive installation about the precariousness of gender, age, and sexuality, at Satellite NYC in Brooklyn, NY, in 2019.

Mueller presented MYSOLATION, a self-portrait series, shot in isolation during the lockdown, in 2020 in Berlin, Germany, and also at Scope Miami in 2021.

Mueller's most extensive immersive installation SPERM. was shown in spring 2021 at the Art Club in Brooklyn, NY, in collaboration with composer and music producer Man Parrish.

Since 2019 Mueller has been regularly showing with Pride Art Berlin, a queer art collective.

In 2022 Mueller curated PRESENT, a 34 queer-artist group show, under the Pride Art New York umbrella, during Pride Month in New York City.

Mueller’s latest portrait series, KINKSTERS, was premiered in Milan Italy in May 2023.

Mueller's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the US, UK, Canada, Mexico, Germany, France, Spain, Brazil, New Zealand, and China. They also received numerous photography awards and nominations, including the Annual Photography Master’s Cup, the Julia Margaret Cameron Awards, the Annual Black & White Spider Awards, the International Color Awards, and See|Me.
